  • Abstract:
International Joint Ventures represent a potentially effective way of competing globally in construction markets. Recent years have seen an increase in the adoption of their usage. The failure rate of such ventures is, however, relatively high and was the catalyst underpinning the research on which the paper is based. The research has identified those factors perceived by experienced practitioners to be key to success and in particular how ‘soft’ factors associated with social values, mutual understanding and trust are ranked against other more contractual and technical factors. The findings indicate that trust and mutual understanding were ranked highest of all the factors identified and consequently are contended to be vital to exist to enable the success of international joint venture projects.
